Meet the teacher

I'm Laura, and I moved from the writing, editing and publishing industry into teaching in 2019. Since then, I've been fortunate enough to work in multiple facets of English teaching, from secondary schools to college resits, GCSE to IELTS. The variety of qualifications and the individuals that I work with means that every day, every task is different!

2024-present

IELTS preparation classes online - these are particularly popular for developing fluency and pronunciation skills with a native English speaker.

Remote teaching in Kathmandu, Nepal

2023-24

Providing and monitoring the Adult GCSE programme for adult classes in a North-East England college; some excellent results, and everyone on the programme achieved at least a grade in their final exams.

Working with adult learners in Strasbourg, France to improve their English across the four key skills: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. 

CELTA certification

2020-23

Teaching both GCSE and Functional Skills to adults, post-16 college learners (those who left school without achieving their English GCSE), and pre-16 learners accessing college as an alternative education provision.

Teaching a unique blend of Functional Skills, British culture, and maths and IT skills to Gurkha recruits from Nepal in the British Army.

Creating SEO-optimised, relevant, and interesting blog posts for websites, as well as editing fiction novels in preparation for publication.

Copywriter and editor

The process for becoming a teacher in England is extremely stringent: you need to have a degree in the relevant subject, complete a specific teaching degree, and then follow the government process for new teachers.

Qualifications

With a minor in Creative Writing, this undergraduate degree not only provided techniques and history for literature analysis but also introduced critiques and approaches for how contemporary culture influences and is influenced by language. 

BA in English Studies

This Cambridge certificate for teaching English as a foreign language is a globally recognised qualification particularly concerned with the 4 keys skills of Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking

CELTA

The PostGraduate Certificate in Education blends pedagogical theory and assignments alongside practical hands-on teaching experience.

PGCE

This postgraduate degree provided a sound basis for analysing the effect of language and structure in all types of writing, particularly in fiction, and prepared me for publishing my own work.
